Each year, in the memory of Howard Schneider, MD, the Illinois Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons provides an award to an orthopaedic
resident for a clinical or basic science research paper. Dr. Schneider was an orthopaedic surgeon who was very active
throughout his career in what was then the Chicago Orthopaedic Society. Many of you may recognize his name due to the
Schneider Rod which was, at the time that he developed it, a significant contribution to the treatment of intramedullary femoral
fractures. Following his death, Dr. Schneider's family established a fund for an annual award to recognize excellence in
resident clinical and research papers.
The recipient of the Schneider Memorial Award will receive $1000 and will have the opportunity to present his or her paper at
a Scientific Session of the Illinois Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting in May. An applicant must currently be a resident in an orthopaedic
training program in Illinois. The paper may deal with any subject in orthopaedics. All papers should be typed, double-spaced
and submitted in duplicate. Please contact the IAOS office for current deadline information. The papers will be judged by a
committee of orthopaedic surgeons from the IAOS.
If there are any questions about the award, please call the IAOS office at (312) 263-7150.
