What's new with MODEMS

MODEMSĒ (Musculoskeletal Outcomes Data Evaluation and Management System) the outcomes assessment program initiated by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and now overseen by the Musculoskeletal Education and Research Institute, is into its second year and in high gear.

Version 2.0 of the outcomes data collection questionnaires is complete and will stay unchanged for the next two year. At that time, some additions will be made, but the core questionnaires should remain the same. There are four main questionnaires to collect patient-derived functional outcomes data: the Lower Limb; Upper Limb-DASH; Pediatrics; and Spine. There are also four optional modules: MODEMS - HK, which includes the hip/knee questionnaire in addition to forms to collect physician data; Physician Assessment, which can be used to collect physician data on complications and severity; Employment, to collect employment status data from patients; and Patient Satisfaction which can be used to collect data on the patient's satisfaction with the process of care they received. Data collection system vendors have been certified and are licensed to distribute Version 2.0 of the questionnaires.

MODEMS PassportĒ software is a new way to collect and transmit MODEMS data to the National Database. It's easy to use, inexpensive, PC compatible, and operates with Windows 95. It allows orthopaedic surgeons to start gathering and transmitting data to MODEMS quickly, and at a low cost. Passport has basic functionality and is a practical alternative to the more sophisticated computer software systems available which practices may wish to use in the future. This new software is available only to MODEMS subscribers at a reasonable cost in addition to the subscription fees. Prices vary according to the number of surgeons using the software in each practice. A demonstration version of Passport is now available on our website.
